What time does Old Rag parking fill up?

On fair-weather spring and fall weekends, overflow parking commonly fills before mid-morning. Arriving before 7 a.m. is the safe plan. Midweek, parking pressure drops dramatically.

Can I park at Berry Hollow for Old Rag?

Yes. The small gravel lot at the end of Route 600 on the south side serves the Saddle Trail route to the summit — the no-scramble approach. It holds only a handful of cars and fills very early on weekends.

Do I need to pay to park at Old Rag?

You need a Shenandoah National Park entrance pass, and from March 1 to November 30 you also need a $2 per person Old Rag day-use ticket purchased in advance on Recreation.gov. There is no separate parking charge.

What happens if Old Rag parking is full?

There is no overflow beyond the signed areas, and parking along the narrow road shoulders is unsafe and enforced. If everything is full your options are to return much earlier another day, hike Berry Hollow on the south side, or switch to White Oak Canyon, which requires no ticket.

The main Old Rag parking area near Nethers is CLOSED for infrastructure work through November 2026. If a guide tells you to park in the big lot at the end of Nethers Road, that guide is out of date. Hikers are currently using signed overflow areas and walking in.

Parking is the single most common reason people drive two hours from D.C. and don't hike Old Rag. Not fitness, not weather — parking. Add a closed main lot and it's the difference between a great day and a wasted one. This page stays current because our homestead sits on that road — we see the situation firsthand.

Where to park right now

1. Nethers Road overflow (the main approach)

With the primary lot out of service, hikers use the signed overflow parking areas along Nethers Road and walk the road shoulder to the trailhead. Budget an extra 10–20 minutes each way depending on where you end up — and remember that's 20–40 minutes added to an already long day, at both ends.

Follow the posted signs and park only in marked areas. The shoulders here are soft, the road is narrow, and hikers are walking on it.

2. Berry Hollow (south side)

A small gravel lot at the end of Route 600 that serves the Saddle Trail route — the shorter way to the summit with no rock scramble. It holds only a handful of cars and fills very early on weekends. This is the trailhead right by our place, which is how I know how quickly it goes.

3. Don't park on the shoulder

This is the mistake that gets cars ticketed and towed. Route 600 and Nethers Road are narrow rural roads with soft shoulders, no sidewalks, and hikers walking in the lane. Cars parked half in the travel lane make it genuinely dangerous. This is also a small community whose residents drive these roads daily — please don't be the reason they can't get past.

When the lots actually fill

Breakfast at 6:45, on the way to the trail Graves Mountain's Market Deli in Syria opens at 7 a.m. — made-to-order sandwiches, coffee, snacks, beer and wine, minutes from the trailhead. It is the only thing within reach that can feed you before an early start, and it means you don't have to drive to Madison the night before or hike on a granola bar. Parking is not your only permission

Two separate things are required, and people conflate them constantly:

A Shenandoah National Park entrance pass — required year-round.
An Old Rag day-use ticket — $2 per person, required March 1 – November 30, bought ahead on Recreation.gov. Full details on how to get one →

There's no separate parking fee. But a ticket doesn't reserve you a space, and a space doesn't substitute for a ticket. You need both.

What to do if everything is full

Try Berry Hollow if you haven't — different road, different lot, and it serves the no-scramble route to the same summit.
Switch to White Oak Canyon or Cedar Run. Six waterfalls, no day-use ticket required, dogs welcome. On a hot day it's arguably the better hike anyway.
Come back at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow. Unglamorous, and it works every time.
Don't circle and wait. There's nowhere for the queue to go, and blocking the road creates a real hazard.

Birch's Library sits on land that borders Shenandoah National Park and is the closest cabin to Old Rag's Berry Hollow trailhead — walk to it, no car, no lot, no 6:30 a.m. gamble after a two-hour drive. Our guests start hiking while everyone else is still circling Nethers Road. White Oak Canyon is a short walk the other direction.
